Carlisle are still looking for a home win this season after being comprehensively outplayed by Exeter City, but the United boss Roddy Collins was honest in his assessment.
He commented: "Basically we were all over the shop, we never passed the ball, we were awful."
"While it was goalless the young kids were doing well but you could see that once Exeter scored we were chasing the game and the kids weren't happy.
"The big thing is that I hope players who are making their way in the game don't get too disheartened. To concede a free header at a set-piece is criminal and we have had words about that."
His Exeter counterpart John Cornforth was delighted with his team's performance saying: "It was very professional I thought the first goal was fantastic as we have worked a lot on set plays.
"I'm very pleased for Don Goodman he hasn't trained very much but he thought he could give me a good hour and that's how it turned out.
"We learned from our performance at Kidderminster last week when we were two goals up and tried to score more.
"In the second half the way we kept the ball was very professional, we have come in for criticism, but a lot of new players have come in and I would ask people to judge us at Christmas.
"It was a very good Third Division team out there today the way we dictated the game was tremendous."
Exeter condemned Carlisle to their second home defeat of the campaign with two goals in the space of three minutes at the end of the first half.
Much travelled veteran striker Goodman exploited naive Cumbrians defending to plunder his first goal for his new club.
Steve Flack's six-yard header struck the crossbar before being cleared for another corner and this time Andy Roscoe's repeat delivery was steered home by Goodman.
Missing five first-teamers a makeshift United fell apart again as Exeter doubled their lead a minute before the break through another of their summer signings.
Glenn Cronin threaded the ball to Brazillian Santos Gaia who didn't break stride as he found Peter Keen's bottom left-hand corner with deadly accuracy with a blistering 18-yard left-foot drive.
Brian Wake and Marc Nixon stood in for suspended strikers Richie Foran and Trevor Molloy, but they hardly troubled the Grecians defence.
Wake did create a gilt-edged opportunity when he turned Gaia inside the box, but he slotted his shot the wrong side of the post.
Kevin Miller in the Exeter goal was given only one real test, diving full length to tip a Will McDonagh shot around the post in the fifth minute
