Nationwide Division Three strugglers Exeter City gave a good account of themselves before going out of the FA Cup to a 3-1 defeat by Premiership Charlton Athletic.

The teams had only met once before in the competition in 1934 when Exeter won 5-2 in a first round replay and Neil McNab's side must have thought they had a chance of securing a draw when they equalised early in the second half However, the home side went on to comfortably book their place in the fourth round.

It was a happy return to goalscoring form for Charlton's Finnish international striker Jonatan Johansson. He scored the first two goals - the first time he has found the net since March.

He put Charlton in front in the 24th minute with an overhead kick after Paul Konchesky's free-kick had caused problems in the Exeter defence.

Within a minute Exeter were unlucky not to equalise when Martin Thomas saw his fierce shot bounce back off the foot of the post and Steve Flack sent the rebound over the bar from three yards.

Charlton created plenty of first-half chances and should have been further ahead at the break.

But the Premiership side was shaken four minutes into the second half when the Grecians equalised with a towering header from the New Zealand defender Santos Gaia from Gary Sheldon's free-kick.

Johansson restored Charlton's lead with another spectacular overhead kick after he was left unmarked when Jason Euell flicked on a Richard Rufus pass.

Euell then hit the post for the home side before putting the result beyond doubt from the penalty spot after Johansson had been brought down by George Pilkington.

The result will be a relief for Charlton whose recent Cup record has been poor having struggled two seasons ago to beat non-League Dagenham & Redbridge. Last season they were dumped out of the competition at home to Walsall.

Exeter gave their 2,000 fans an excellent performance despite losing to their more experienced opponents.
