Exeter City were denied the opening day victory their performance deserved after conceding an equaliser in the dying minutes.

In a lively game both sides created more than enough chances to win the game but had to be content with a point apiece.

Steve Flack put City ahead with a powerful header in the first half and should have stretched the lead further after the break, but they were denied the perfect start when Lewis Killeen struck with three minutes to go.

It was the visitors who settled first and came close to scoring in the opening stages.

Dave Cameron flicked a clearance towards the lively Killeen, who rifled a shot inches past the post from a tight angle.

Halifax always looked a threat and Jon Cullen fired a long-range shot over the bar before Cameron forced James Bittner to save well with a shot from 15 yards midway through the half.

Against the run of play it was the Grecians who opened the scoring in the 24th minute.

Kwame Ampadu swung in a free-kick from close to the corner flag and Flack towered above everyone to head the ball powerfully into the top corner.

Ryan Mallon's fine cross was headed wide by Killeen as Halifax pressed and Mark Monington volleyed over the bar after good work from Lee Elam.

After the break City came within a whisker of stretching the lead when Gareth Sheldon curled a free-kick from the edge of the box against the post.

Halifax keeper Clint Davies superbly kept out two bullet headers from Flack, after the striker was picked out first by James Coppinger and then Chris Todd.

Town threw men forward in the closing stages. Cullen struck a free-kick against the crossbar and Bittner superbly tipped Simon Parke's header past the post.

However, they levelled when Cullen's corner was flicked on by Parke and Killeen headed home at the far post.
