Torquay United took the spoils in a stormy Devon derby with Exeter City.

In a game littered with free-kicks and bookings it was the visitors who deservedly came out on top after scoring two first half goals.

Sean Hankin had the first chance of the game for Torquay in the fourth minute when he thumped a fierce free-kick just over the bar from all of 40 yards.

The game soon settled into the usual derby clash, with tackles flying in and plenty of effort from both sides but little in the way of meaningful football.

After a scrappy start Torquay eventually took the lead midway through the half through David Graham. The striker exchanged a neat series of passes with Lee Canoville before calmly slotting the ball home from six yards.

Exeter battled to get back into the game and Martin Thomas headed Barry McConnell's cross past the post.

Then Gareth Sheldon ran on to goalkeeper Kevin Miller's long clearance and shot just wide from 15 yards.

Torquay almost stretched the lead when Hankin's free-kick was headed into the sidenetting by Jason Fowler.

Exeter equalised four minutes before half time. McConnell's chip into the box was flicked on by Steve Flack and James Coppinger smashed home his first game for the club with a fierce drive from 15 yards.

In first-half injury time Tony Bedeau restored the lead for the Gulls when he charged down an attempted clearance and lobbed the ball calmly over the goalkeeper.

After the break Exeter chased the game and Coppinger forced Kevin Dearden to save well with an attempted lob from 20 yards.

City chased the game but there was no way back. Coppinger summed up the afternoon for the Grecians when he scuffed a shot at the goalkeeper after being put clean through in the closing stages.

Gulls boss Leroy Rosenior said: "I am pleased with the three points but we shouldn't get carried away, we still have a lot to do."

Exeter boss John Cornforth added: "I thought we were awful. We didn't play with any passion and I am extremely disappointed."
