Exeter 4-2 Walsall- Match Report

Grecians dream impossible dream

Exeter kept their slim hopes of avoiding relegation alive with an entertaining 4-2 win over 10-man Walsall.

Walsall, who have slipped to just three points above the drop zone, had the better of the first half and almost went in front when Jon Macken hit the inside of both posts, but Alex Nichols capitalised on a mistake by Exeter defender Troy Archibald-Henville to open the scoring for the visitors in the 30th minute.

Exeter equalised four minutes after half-time when Daniel Nardiello headed home after Alan Gow had forced a fine save from Walsall goalkeeper David Grof.

A mistake by Exeter's Steve Tully led to Florent Cuvelier putting Walsall back in front with a fine strike from 20 yards before Emmanuele Smith was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.

Gow drew Exeter level with an exquisite chip from the edge of the penalty box before the former Rangers man put Exeter in front with another fine goal, side-footing home after good work by Billy Jones and Elliot Frear.

It was all Exeter from then on and Liam Sercombe wrapped up the points by finishing from close range three minutes from time after good work by Gow and Nardiello.
