Exeter missed a string of chances and had to be content with a point against 10 man Kidderminster.
The visitors took the lead through Russell Penn after just 99 seconds. Exeter deservedly equalised through Billy Jones, and the defender then missed a penalty against his former club as Exeter dominated.
There were plenty of chances after the break but Exeter couldn't find a way through. Kidderminster could have stolen the points themselves on a spirited performances but a draw was probably a fair result.
Kidderminster made the perfect start and took the lead within one minute 39 seconds. Robert Davis lofted the ball into the box with his first touch in a Kidderminster shirt and Penn was in the right place to stroke the ball past Paul Jones from 10 yards.
The goal stunned St James's Park but Exeter almost responded immediately. Jon Challinor found Lee Phillips and the City striker sprinted into the box before seeing his powerful shot deflected just past the post.
The game entered a scrappy phase and there were few chances at either end.
Stansfield used his pace to drill a low cross from the left but he just failed to pick out Phillips and Exeter attempted to push forward.
Exeter were level in the 28th minute. Phillips used his pace and power to burst into the box and as prepared to shoot the ball ran to Jones who stuck out a boot to steer the ball past Scott Bevan.
Exeter enjoyed their best spell of the half after the goal and should have taken the lead.
Phillips found Stansfield inside the box and when the striker's first shot was blocked by Stuart Whitehead he thumped the rebound into the arms of the goalkeeper.
Exeter should have taken the lead ten minutes before half time. Jones was tripped as twisted and turned inside the box and was tripped as he attempted to turn. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Jones stepped up to take the pick but struck the ball at the feet of the goalkeeper.
Exeter continued to look dangerous and Challinor struck the ball into the arms of the goalkeeper from 25 yards.
After the break Exeter pushed forward in search of a winner and twice went close in the opening stages.
Buckle met Jones' corner but couldn't keep down his header. Matthew Gill then used his pace to burst into the box and forced Bevan to save well with a shot from a tight angle.
At the other end Davies struck a free kick over the bar and Iyseden Christie fired wide but Kidderminster offered little as an attacking force after the break and seemed happy to try and hold on for a point.
The Grecians found it difficult to break down a well organised defence but remained patient.
Stansfield rose well to meet Jones' cross but his header was comfortably saved by Bevan.
Kidderminster were reduced to ten men with 20 minutes left when Reuben Reid was dismissed for lunging his head in the face of Chris Todd.
Kidderminster had a couple of late chances to snatch it. Russell Penn had a low drive saved by Bevan and Gavin Hurren headed wide after he was found by Davies.
Exeter desperately hunted a winner. Substitute Jamie Mackie controlled the ball but struck a shot high over the bar from the edge of the box.
In the last minute Russell was put through for Kidderminster but was denied by Todd's fine lunge. But both sides had to be content with a point.
