Two goals from striker Sean Devine was enough to earn Exeter their third victory in a row as they overpowered struggling Northwich.

The hitman struck twice in the closing stages after dominating for most of the game.

The visitors hardly helped themselves when defender Chris Royle foolishly got himself sent off for a reckless challenge on Barry McConnell at the start of the second half.

Exeter are beginning to mount a challenge which could see the side stake a claim for an immediate return to the Football League.

They always looked the better side and in Devine they have a striker in a different class from most other frontmen in the Conference.

Devine should have opened the scoring in the ninth minute. James Coppinger floated a perfect cross to the striker, who could only head into the ground from six yards.

Steve Flack then put a glancing header past the post from Alex Jeannin's cross as Exeter took control of the game.

Exeter have made a habit of dropping points in games they really should have won at home this season.

Northwich looked well-organised at the back and it looked like another frustrating afternoon for the Grecians.

In first-half injury time Gareth Sheldon went close when he ran on to Flack's header on and rounded the goalkeeper before seeing his close-range shot scrambled away.

The game swung back in favour of Exeter when Royle was dismissed, and they came within inches of opening the scoring when Dwane Lee thumped a magnificent volley from 30 yards against the crossbar.

The breakthrough finally came with 17 minutes left on the clock. McConnell picked out Devine with his back to goal inside the box and the striker turned a struck a deflected shot into the back of the net.

He made sure for Exeter with his second nine minutes later when he tapped home from close range when McConnell's cross was headed back across goal by Flack.
